Got Poetry?

Poetry, with its graceful contours and image-laden words, is said to be the soul of literature. It’s expressive, it’s elegant, and it touches each one of us.

From simple rhymes, such as Mother Goose and Jack Prelutsky's A pizza the size of the Sun, to ancient epics like the Iliad by Homer, to contemporary verses that challenge all traditional ideas of what form a poem can take: poetry exists in different eras, appears in different forms, and attracts different audiences. But whenever, wherever, however, it always serves one goal – bringing literature to people, in style.

April is National Poetry Month! To join in this nationwide celebration, and to encourage youngsters to dive into the world of poetry, we have designed a special activity for our young patrons. Children grades K-5 are welcome to participate by finishing one of our poetry worksheets or writing an original poem on their own. Turn it in for a chance to win a prize in one of our weekly drawings!

There will be 4 drawings, on April 9, 16, 23, and 30. Two names will be chosen each week, one from grades K-2 and the other from grades 3-5.

Interested? Ask about it at the Children's desk! 367-4069
